On October 23, 2003, Lieutenant Mark Donald, a Navy SEAL medic, was part of a joint American-Afghan convoy on patrol in Afghanistan’s Paktika province. The convoy was winding along beside a wadi, or dry riverbed, bordered by a mountain to one side and a rocky ridge to the other. Donald and an American driver were in the front seat, while two Afghan soldiers were in the back.
Suddenly, a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) blasted into the canyon.
